Smart Card Enabler

[Hong Kong Standard, 25 November 1999]

SPECTRA Technologies, a major Hong Kong-based developer of electronic transaction devices, last week announced the availability of a multipurpose, cordless point-of-sale (POS) terminal for sophisticated smart card programs.

The new S9010 cordless POS terminal is supposed to be able to handle all credit card, debit card and so-called e-purses under customised, or proprietary smart card initiatives.

The device's silver-cased cordless handset incorporates a three-track magnetic card reader, chip card reader, a large graphics liquid crystal display, multiple auto-detectors, 1-megabyte memory and four Security Access Module (SAM) slots.

Its base unit - which is linked via infrared - provides a compact power supply, modem and printer.

"Featuring superior security, the S9010 multipurpose POS terminal allows banks and retailers to issue their own smart card-based programs," said Timothy Wong, technical director at SPECTRA Technologies.

He said the S9010 is based on the company's successful S9000i POS terminal family, more than 100,000 units of which have already been sold and installed across Asia.

In Hong Kong, SPECTRA Technologies controls over 50 per cent of the POS terminal market.

The company is a certified partner of American Express, Diners Club, Mondex, JCB, Maestro, MasterCard and VISA.

Further inquiries about the S9010 multipurpose, cordless POS terminal can be made on 2319-2918.
