In February 1999, SPECTRA Technologies was invited to design and develop a self-service ticket vending system for Guangzhou Subway Train. 16 units of terminals, which were modified from UEMM, were installed along its 16 stations of the subway route. It accepts debit card for real-time transaction in consuming accumulated train ticket.
Because of the system, conflicts built on small changes are eliminated. Besides, no operator is required that resources are switched to other services. Moreover, as transaction is conducted on a real-time basis, time used in monetary transfer among banks and the subway company can also be saved. On the passengers' side, they no longer need to queue for ticketing and changes. Last but not least, since no real cash is involved, danger of robbery, theft and embezzlement can be avoided.
